Thursday 4th October

Today was a very fun day. The first part of the day was going through a powerpoint with different work from different designers, here is the list of designers which I am going to try and research as many as I can:

Artist Research: for 3DCP

  1. Marc Newson – product design
  2. Droog Design – dry humour, funny objects
  3. Michael Marriott
  4. Carl Clerkin
  5. Campana Brothers – Brazil, like go to go exploring

Architecutre – Structures and Space

  1. John Pawson – minimalism
  2. Dieter Rams
  3. Le Corbusier – Modernism,
  4. Richard Rogers
  5. Zaha Hadid
  6. Frank Gehry
  7. Rick Baker
  8. Rob Bottin
  9. KNB EFX Group
  10. Tippet Studio
  11. Ken Adam
  12. Ai WeiWei
  13. Felix Gonzalez Torees
  14. Matthew Barney

The next part of the day we had to get put into groups as we had to plan how to make a bridge from one table to the next. It had to be suitable for a boat table to cross underneath it and it had to be able to accept the weight of a remote control car. I think our group found this a bit difficult because we only had 4 people, and as we hardly knew each other, it was a struggle to get comfortable, but we went out to have some lunch and plan and we ended up thinking of a good idea. It was simple but it worked. There was a bit of a a problem when creating the bridge where the two bits of cardboard didnt match up and therefore we had to accept that, However, it worked in our favour as was able to use it as a jump.

These are the photographs and a quick slow motion video:

Wednesday 3rd October

Today we had a tour of the level 9 prototype room. It was a brief one hour session explaining all the equipment that we are able to use, understanding what we need to bring out, how how much time we need to book in advance because of how busy it actually gets, and where to get equipment.

I understand that some machines and equipment need to have another session to explain about it which needs to be booked in advance.

it was quite interesting to understand what we actually have available to us.

Tuesday 2nd October

3DCP (3D Design & Contemporary Practise)

The tutor was going over some of the areas that are covered through 3D, This is some of a few that I didn’t realise it covered:

  • Furniture Design
  • Technical Effects /Model Making/Design for Performance
  • Packaging Design
  • Vehicle Design
  • Interaction – when going round a museum and pressing buttons and screens pop up, an iPhone could be one also a playground – easier for human element.

Architecture – they aren’t 7 years courses, they are normally 3 years, but then go into employment.

Interior Architecture – Looks at space, structures that exist, movement and light.

Exterior Architecture – new builds, how to build them, city / town planning.

The morning was going over a presentation about what 3DCP consists off. I did find it interesting, and I feel like it looks like a good course, the more digital aspects of it such as game art was really interesting about how things can be created.

Fine Art doesn’t have a course, but 3DCP should be the course if you wanted to do that.

The second activity of the day was creating a structure out of spaghetti and a hot glue gun. This structure will have to hold 3 plastic balls. The balls aren’t allowed to touch each other, the balls have to be removable and the balls aren’t allowed to be cut.

This activity is a try and error. Not everyone is going to be able to use the glue gun at the same time, so we can have use blue tack to practise a structure and plan the structure before actually creating it. It seems like out of the box thinking activity. We also had to take photographs of the sculptures with the 3 balls in-front of white screens. This way we could play with lighting and shadows and test out our structures.

After this, I put paper around the structure to protect it from a basket ball. My structure didn’t last, but it was quite fun to watch.

I found this quite enjoyable, and as I didn’t overthink the task, I felt it worked in my favour because I was able to be free in what I was doing. I felt like it was out of my comfort zone, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought the task was when it was getting explained. I did worry, but I tried to keep calm because I knew that thinking could ruin the final product.

I have included all the photographs that I have taken today in my sketch book because I felt like it would be more presentable in my sketchbook.

Monday 1st October

Before we started the day, our teacher went over information about assessment and how it is going to work and also about learner planners. I found this information extremely useful, and it made me realise how I have to make sure everything is ready for Monday incase my assessment is on Monday.

Today is the first day of 3DCP. The project for the morning is called ‘All Your Birthdays Rolled Into One: Concept Memory’. From the powerpoint: memories can be able to go into the key words or Zeitgeist, Personal Narrative, Shared Event, Collective Consciousness and Trauma. We are going to be able to go through 2D/3D media, being able to work in groups and create some installation and photographic work.

This was a picture that was put onto the board, I found it really interesting because it was an approach using a Venn diagram about understanding and not understanding.

The activity is to try and recall birthday presents that I have received , during my life – using words on A1 piece of paper. This might be a bit difficult for me as my birthday is 3 days after Christmas, so although I get birthday presents, most of my presents I get for Christmas, and I get more for Christmas than my birthday by far, and Christmas overpowers my birthday, so I remember my Christmas presents over my birthday presents.

Some artists: Tracey Emin, Peter Davis , Kate Morass.

This was my approach, I am going to be redoing this because I feel like I can achieve this so much better, which I will upload onto the blog after I have created it.

The photograph below was the one I done in class:

Afterwards, I had to removed all the white of the background. I am really not sure what that meant until I got explained through it. It seems very confusing, but as my piece is technically 3 in 1, I am unsure how I am supposed to do it.

Rob Ryan Matthew Ritchie

We had to remove the white area, and try and make the page very stringy. The photographs below show what I have done:

I am not sure whether I like these, I am going to add in my sketchbook which is other work I have done, another one odfthese but just the writing in a Graphic Design format because as I want to go into that section, I feel like combining my work to make it more what I would like to do in the future.

Unfortunately, I was unable to continue with the task as we had to evacuate the building.

Friday 28th October

The first part of the day was going over the difference between Fashion Textiles and Fashion Promotion. The whole group found this really interesting, and it went on for much longer than expected because so many people were asking questions about the two subjects and going through the instagram, and the specialised subject power-points. We also looked at peoples work in magazine form and finding out which is a pass, merit and distinction.

This is the consumer profile that we had to do, we had to create one ready for what a Wolfgang Tilmans.

I had to create a mood board, this was for how I wanted my photoshoot to look in regards to Wolfgang Tilman. I am not sure whether it relates, the whole process confused me a lot. However, I did try my best.

We then had to go out and create a photoshoot using our garment final piece, I chose to do a hat:

Then we had to create a double page spread. This was my double page spread. I wasn’t happy with my one as I felt like it was really rushed and I didn’t have enough time to get everything I wanted to do. I like to experiment and plan and I wasn’t able to do that.

Wednesday 26th September

Life Drawings & Photography:

I have never done life drawings before. I have never really drawn before, I havent even drawn a person. This was my first time and I was extremely nervous about it. I was so worried that I was going to embarrass myself because of my lack of drawing skills and perhaps offend the model. The tutor was so kind and helpful towards as I took the time to go up to her and explain my situation, she helped me through the entire process when it got to the more intense drawing. The end results which I done all my myself, I was so proud of it.

These are all my drawings:

This was the final piece, I am not sure why it is upside down. I am not sure how to change that.

I done Photography at GCSE and A – Levels, and majority of my group didn’t know anything about photography. I thought that it would be beneficial for the person that didn’t know anything about photography to participate and experiment with the equipment rather than me doing it as I didn’t think it was fair. I did take photographs of what was going on, however.

Tuesday 26th September

Today we had to make our final piece for Fashion Textiles. We had to use the same design as we used for yesterdays exercise. It was quite difficult for me because I always plan what I want to do, and I have some time to figure out what route I am going to go down, how I am going to present my work, and how I am going to create a really interesting, unique and different concept. I found it challenging that I was getting put on the spot, I felt that my idea wasn’t as strong as it could of been. I also couldn’t change the idea, which I found very hard as I thought of some better ideas throughout the day which I couldn’t change.

I had the whole morning to create the final piece. I thought I would do a hat. I used masking tape, and I would tape up a small plastic cup and I would peel it off when it was strong enough. I draw triangles on the masking type as part of the design, but I didnt like it as I felt it was very basic, and when doing the triangles at different sizes, it didnt look like I was thinking out of the box. I like being creative with my work, and I couldn’t do that as it was so fast paced and on the spot thinking.

These are some of the photographs that I took of my final piece hat.

The above photographs, some are steps by steps and so were just experimentation, but the hat was the final piece. I didn’t find doing this enjoyable to be honest, I have never done 3D making, and creating fashion garments, but I didn’t find it enjoyable, I prefer doing digital creation.

In the afternoon, we watched an episode on Abstract which is on Netflix. It was about a Nike Design who created the Air Jordans. It was quite interesting to watch and learn about the brand and about Tinker Hatfield.

During this day, we also created a consumer profile that would relate to a Wolfgang Tillmans customer. This was quite difficult because I have never done a customer profile before, and I felt like Wolfgang Tillmans customer is a unique and niche audience, and all customers will like different things. so I felt it was hard to figure out with a customer would like.

This is what the customer profile looks like:

We done this small project in groups.

Monday 24th September

Today was the first day of Fashion Promotion and Fashion Textiles. The first activity was to take some photographs of our research images, and really zoom into the photograph so that we can’t tell that it is a type of fashion clothing. Literally having to look at the pattern. These are the photographs I looked at:

After that, we had to draw the lines that we saw in the image. Very briefly and quickly. I found this quite easy, and I didn’t feel under pressure which I normally would, I didn’t even overthink which I would do as well as I find drawing very difficult. These are my three drawings:

IMG_0322.JPG

After this, we got only white paper only so that we can focus on the actually designing rather than how the colours look. We made our 2D Designs into 3D Designs which are shown below:

After this, I had to put masking tape over one of my trainers and put multiple layers of masking tape over the shoe but only on one half. We then transferred out designs onto the shoe. I picked the triangle one, and I designed in a different way to the actual drawing. The shoe design was influenced by the drawing. I done this in pencil because then I could rub out if I made any mistakes. I went over it in black pen to make the triangles stand out.

After this, I put my samples on the stand in many different ways, I wanted to experiment and not overthink as much, and these were my outcomes:

Friday 21st September

Today was animation, the last subject in Lens Based Media. The first part of the day was doing the photography crit. This was my final piece:

Photography Crittt

This was all about pain. I used my brother as the model because unfortunately he is going through a really difficult time at the moment as he had a very serious accident with his arm. He was unable to go to school and unable to do anything with his right hand which was his writing hand. This was during the summer holidays as-well so unfortunately he was extremely bored and in pain. These photographs are sort of documentation of what he had to go through. The lighting is low key lighting, and I did edit on photoshop because I felt like I could increased the contrast and decrease the brightness.

The next part of the day was doing animation:

The title that we got was ‘Age of the times’, and our animation had to be about that, but in non obvious ways. This was hard for me as I am not a good drawer, and I felt like I was proper overthinking everything and my work wasn’t as successful as it could be so I will be doing another animation when I have time, before the assessment date. These are the drawings that I did do:

This is my Animation:

Platforms for Animation:

Thursday 20th September

Today was still Lens Based Media, but instead of Photography, the group went onto do Film. Film was quite interesting, I had never done film before, I had always avoiding it and done print because I felt like that I’d rather do print because I was more confident in that.

We started of the session with doing a word search of all the terminology that we would need to know when doing Film.

We got set homework to do about watching about 7/8 clips and a film about film and cinematography. I wrote notes for all the clips I wrote because I felt like ti would come in handy, if I ever need to reference anything about light, cinematography or even need to mention films. I recorded a lot of notes from these videos which I have stuck into my sketchbook as I was righting them up neater.

As people didnt do it, our tutor Ian, gave people time to complete the task and to complete the 4 page homework assignment of finding a photograph, film, movie and video game with good lighting, composition and colour.

These are the story boards that we made for our two short films, One was an edited video and another was a one take video.
