Tuesday 4th December

Today was a making and doing day. However, during the day the tutors were going through our sketchbooks per table. Our session went on for about 2 hours including our break. Therefore we was barely able to get any work done because we were concentrating on going through our sketchbooks. I did really learn what I am doing, not wrong, but not correct. I learnt so much feedback, which has made me look at my sketchbook differently. I do wish I knew this information at the beginning before I started my sketchbook. I have realised that I need to look at my sketchbook more as a work book, and not just a record of all my work.

These were the notes that were written for me:

After the session, and when I went home. I created these drawings:

One of these drawings are following on from the session from yesterday.

However, I went a different direction and these are the pieces that I created ready for Thursdays presentation:

Theres the trail from the station to the university and using the building as a canvas. I did create a poster which is the image with type which shows that type will be at the start of the line, and it indicates that this is the way to the university.

Monday 3rd December

Today was a graphics worksop. One of the lectures from Graphic Design BA came in to talk to us about how we can explore super graphics. It was very different but I think it really helped with me helping with my idea. It was quite fun. We were able to work in groups and create a super graphic out the window. I was in a team of 4 people, the people that I would normally work with.

The symbols that we were using were; arrows, left hands, left, go words and they were in different sizes, fonts and tones. I thought that because we were limited to what we could use, we were able to think simply to what we can achieve from a high

These are the photographs that I took of the work. I was the person that was sent outside to see how efficiently the work can be seen from the window. We worked extremely well as a group, and we were able to communicate through phoning each other to say what needs to be improved from the inside. I did enjoy doing this.

These are the two designs that we had. Our group preferred the designs with the ‘GO’ in the background.

I had to zoom in on the photograph otherwise the photograph would not be able to see what the window is saying. However, when walking past you can clearly see the window. This was a different task, and it was a bit of an mind opener because you are able to see things completely different.

It did help me with my idea. I was going to put things into the window, however when I tried it, you could not see what I was trying to say. It was extremely difficult and I realised it wold not work the way that this project worked.

All the photograph looks like is a piece of paper up against the window. I dont think the font was thick enough for this.

Thursday 29th November

Today was the critique day. We were put into groups and speaking in front of a group of people about our idea. I created a 5 page presentation PDF on my idea, but I am going to be expand more on my idea over the weekend as I am not happy with what I have done.

The rest of the day I have been catching up with my blogs. I am up to date with all my blogs, but I wanted to include more information in them as I want my blogs to a higher standard, as I know that the blogs help with the reference process for university.

presentation lost and found – this is the link to my PDF.

The basis of my idea, is the London transport unground map. I was really inspired by this, and I really wanted to do a project on this. I felt like I havent done what I wanted to do.

27th November

These are the some of the artist work that was shown to me during the presentation part of the session. I think that artist work is always beneficial to helping the flow of the work. I want to be able to use the artist inspiration, within my own work.

Josef Albers – Homage To The Squares

Gerhard Ritcher – Colour Charts, there is also a colour wheel that we have been recommended to get, which I am going to invest in because I feel like it was going to help me a lot more.

These were the photographs that I created, thinking about colour and placement. There was an instagram page called ‘Things Organised Neatly’. This page shows item placed neatly, and taking colour into consideration as a priority.

I thought of using pink as my favourite colour is actually my favourite colour, so I seemed to have more pink coloured items in my bag that I bring to uni. The layout is very particular, but I would like to expand more of these in my portfolio because I feel like it can be really interesting as a small little project. I thought I would use the colour pencils in a random order to create a line drawing to show colour, and to show being neat as it was about layout as well. I got the pencils straight out of pencil case so it was completely random, and free.

The next part of the day was to create the colour swatches on a random photograph that we chose. I wanted to do Sponge Bob Square Pants, but I felt that was too easy, and that wasn’t going to challenging me. The object of the project was use the eyedropper tool and create colour squares of all the colours in the photograph. I used a photograph of a rusty ship in water as I felt like that would be quite challenging, and would be interesting.

The rest of the session was doing research on my idea for the way finding & super graphics work. I am a bit confused on what I actually want to do. I want to do it based on the London underground tube, and how the maps are so distinctive. However, I think I have set my standards to high for this. I don’t know why, but I feel like it will be too challenging, or it won’t go to how I am thinking about the idea in my head. I am quite confused at the moment, but I am hoping the group critique will help me a lot.

I am going to be creating a 5 page PDF powerpoint for the critique, but I do have a few initial ideas which I have created which is the following:

I want to think more about my idea, and how I can use the space around the peninsula , and think about the best way to grab attention. I am more leaning towards using actual graphic elements of banners, posters, large scale objects to grab the attention of the general public, trying to be grab primary and secondary audiences.

Monday 26th November

Today we started a new brief called ‘Lost + Found’: Super graphics.

The first part the session was going through the brief with Soof. It was really interesting learning about Super Graphics.

What are Supergraphics?

These are large-scale graphics which areused in outdoor spaces, wayfinding andidentifying signage, illustrative murals and corporate branding.

What is wayfinding?

Wayfinding is a system that helps usersnavigate through a physical environment and enhance their understanding and experience of the space.

  • Clerkenwall Design Week
  • Dreamland – Typography
  • Old Street Station

The Graphics BA tutor came in to talk to us:

  • Inform, Instruct, Engage, Experience
  • Zebra Crossings re designs
  • There were a few names being spoke about but I don’t know how to spell them but:
  • Morak Mirysof
  • Hate Press
  • Carlos Cruiz Diaz
  • Looking at super graphics inside and outside

The next part of the session was to go on a site visit from the Greenwich Station to Ravensbourne, taking photographs. I took over 50 photographs so I am only going to include a few, but the rest is in my sketchbook.

The next part of the session I was thinking of ideas, and creating a powerpoint to print off all of my photographs, also taking photographs of google maps using different settings: satellite, maps, 3d and 2d of the areas from a birds eye view.

SHOW THESE IN MY SKETCHBOOK

Thursday 22nd November

Today was the day of the happening. There were 7 groups, and we all participated in each others happening, and then there was a 10 page powerpoint that we had to present to the group. The presentation scared me as I get nervous speaking at the front in front of people. I am alright talking in front of people normally, and I am an outgoing and loud person. However, in presentations wise it makes me anxious. However I tried to put that behind me, and got on with it, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. I did enjoy trying to get our happening working and I felt like everyone got involved, everyone enjoyed it especially at the balloon part there was loads of laughter and watching so I felt like it went very well. Better than what I thought.

These are a few of the photographs from the happening. I really enjoyed doing the happening, as it was completely different to me and its something that I have never done before, and I have never done group work either but I think I handled the situation really well.

Monday 19th & Tuesday 20th Novemeber

Monday and Tuesday were days where we were making and doing, trying to get our heads around how the happening was going to work, what we were going to do, how it was going to look and set up. I did create some happening layouts off my own accord to try and visualise how the happening could be laid out:

LAYOUT HAPPENING:

This is just a page about what I contributed to the group. I wanted to show everything that I created as part of the group, so that I am able to speak about it during my critique, and to prove that I did contribute to the group, and worked as part of a team.

Firstly I created our first presentation, and on this presentation I created the mind map, one of the mood boards and I done the layout of the five pages.

  • PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE POWERPOINT

Next I created the 4 page booklet because I wanted to bring some graphical element to the project, and show a physical booklet around the class. This didn’t go to plan as I only got a chance to print copy of the booklet, and that booklet I stuck one of the pages upside down and I felt embarrassed by it. However, it could of been seen as people need to make more effort to read something, and turn the book upside down, and therefore it was part of the contrasting meaning of the happening.

The feathers were my own images from a dream catcher, and I used feathers as they symbolise being spiritual, and calming and that relates to our groups theme meditation, and reliving all of the stress that we encountered.

I also created a last minute moving image invite as the idea we thought of didnt work, and didnt go to plan and no one else seemed to realise that we didnt have a moving image invite so I decided to do it myself. I had an idea, and it did work, but the quality wasn’t as good as I had hoped for.

ADD YOUTUBE VIDEO OF MOVING IMAGE INVITE.

Thursday 15th November

Motion Graphics tutors came into speak to us about our moving image invite. They gave us a powerpoint to help us create our invite. I was really intrigued about motion graphics, it was really interesting.

These are a few of the slides that I thought could help me in the future:

This is the story board for our moving image invite:

The day was a lot of discussing our idea, and someone writing notes. It was more of a discussion day about what our moving image was going to be able, and planning our happening as well. I felt that this was where our group really bonded, and started to stick to one idea. I think it helped us understand each other as people, and how we can all work together as a team.

We all contributed to this, but just one person wrote the notes:

Tuesday 13th November

The way that we need to know when working in groups:

  • Identity what peoples strengths are
  • Make sure everyone has a job
  • Make sure everyone is included and knows whats happening

This information was given to us at the start of the day to make sure that we all know how to work in groups properly, especially myself as I haven’t done group work before I started on this course; it is scary for me, and I have grown in this area. I find it hard due to past experiences, however through working in retail I have grown in this aspect that has helped me on this course more so at the moment.

Useful things to do:

  • Create a WhatsApp so you can update each other
  • Decide who is going to work on what
  • Conduct research as a group and share your learning
  • Write down in a couple of sentence what you are doing (like a thesis)

I have copied these points from the board as I thought it would be useful to look back on at a later date.

We needed to have these 5 things created by the time the day finished:

  • Five page PDF Presentation
  • 15 different images from 15 different artists ( 7 artists have to be from Bauhaus)
  • 5 different drawings
  • two mood boards
  • an presentation which shows the above and a mission statement.

I created the powerpoint, mind map and one of the mood boards.

I wanted to create the presentation as I feel like I am a good listening, and because I know how to touch type, I can type really quickly, and it makes sense with barely any mistakes. so I felt I was able to record the conversation. I like doing mood boards as its more digital artistic work, it wasn’t as good as I wanted to be due to the time limit, and still trying to figure out our idea and it also wasn’t using my own photographs which might have been a lot easier.

Our idea is all about meditation and relaxation. It also using a lot of contrast. The way the contrast works is the combination of loud and soft. People come in and get a glow stick, this glow stick will need to go on their body (this is so I can take the photographs of the happening to create a mini booklet of the event), they will be doing other breathing and stretching exercises. I will be taking photographs of the event using shutter speeds to create interesting images, and then editing on photoshop in different ways, this will also help with my portfolio. At the end, people will find a balloon, and inside the balloon, will be a quote by Bauhaus, and the sound of the balloon creates a contrast of the relaxation environment that just took place. The way I am interpreting the reason for our group choosing meditation because it provides an escape from life, we are able to sit in peace with no distractions, trying to calm our inner minds. This is a stressful time for everyone, and being in group work may not have been up everyone’s street, so it allows all the negativity and the stress to leave our bodies. It also allows us to capture artwork using the happening. I am quite excited to see how this happening goes, as the days goes on we will have more of an idea of everything.

This is the powerpoint presentation. I have taken the photographs from my phone as I can’t copy and paste images into it. There was a layout of the presentation which I will include as well:

Our mission statement:

We are going to create a soothing and tranquil environment that will provoke deep thought and self-reflection in participants. We plan on using medium such as mirrors, balloons and lights. We will manipulate the use of these through reflection.

Monday 12th November

Today was the start of another small two week project in relation to the 100th birthday of Bauhaus.

I didn’t know what Bauhaus was until this project.

RESEARCH on BAUHAUS CAN GO HERE

The tutors went through a powerpoint, about bauhaus and giving us information about ideas that we can do. There are different parties that are well known such as the metallic party and ‘Beard Nose and House Party’.

The following bullet points are the notes that I wrote down while the presentation was going on:

  • Walter Gropius – Founder
  • Kandisky
  • Annie Albus
  • Hunta Stolz – Self Portrait 1928 – 2D & 3D
  • Triadic Ballet – Oskar Schlelemer
  • Beau Arts Ball 1931 – Architecture
  • Andy Warhol – The Factory – Art is what you can get away with
  • Film and Video tape at the party, and the film continues to roll
  • velvet underground
  • dastriadsche ballet – coloured background – not original ballet – grid on the floor – pink and white colour  – geometry – spiral skirts, doing spirals on a spiral – different lighting and camera angles
  • fashion in motion – Kansai Yamamoto
  • hussein chalayan – autum to winter – chairs into a suitcase – covers to clothes
  • A video on A – Z dance – a variety of different dance styles
  • Paris is burning 1991 – dance battler but there is no touching involved
  • Channel 4 – ident diner – trailer as channel 4 is all about identity
  • raine alen – miller – somesuch – low key lighting – different things to look at, not just looking at one subject
  • Foley – film + tv sound effects – creating them – The Sound of Cos

The next part of the session was creating a fashion garment to come off the body in response to the Bauhaus. The group wanted to do a design that came from spirals. I thought the garment was quite interesting as we all got involved in the designing and thinking stage. Spirals always look good when they are on people so we thought that creating a colour garment would be the best option.

These are the photographs from the process that I took:

When putting these spirals onto the body of cardboard, and the design was really effective. This is the first time our group worked together as a group and it was really fun as we all got on, we all spoke and said our ideas.

I have never worked in a group project before, excluding being at work in retail, but in a learn environment I havent. I did enjoy getting to know new people in the group and felt like I contributed a lot to the end idea.

THIS IS LEFT OVER PAPER THAT I HAVE PUT IN MY SKETCHBOOK BECAUSE WE WERE TOLD NOT TO THROW ANYTHING WAY. THIS IS WHAT I HAVE CREATED.
